Hands and knees is a common position for labor and birth when women are "allowed
to" choose, without pressure from caregivers. This mother and child came through in
good health.
At right, Trish Ross is chatting with a
newborn during a neonatal exam.
This girl and her twin brother were delivered
normally (no induction, no surgery) at full
term, with no problem. One was head down,
and the other was breech. The smaller twin,
this little girl, weighed about 5 pounds while
her brother weighed about 5 1/2 pounds.
Not long after this picture was taken, the
mother and her family walked several miles
through the bush to their home.
At right, Astrid
Grove (Shauna
Dillard) supports
and comforts a
laboring mother.

an article for
Midwifery Today
about this trip.
